Our History

In the spring of 1956, ministers from several Methodist churches in the area saw the need for a Methodist church in the Martinez area. A small but dedicated group of 19 men and women met at the Martinez Community Club for only four weeks before deciding to buy the present property on Washington Road. An old green building on the property which had previously served as a summer home, a medical clinic, and a gambling hall was quickly renovated and became the meeting place for the new Martinez United Methodist church.

As MUMC has grown during the last 50+ years, there have been three major building efforts – a sanctuary in 1965, a larger sanctuary with the old one becoming the fellowship hall in 1977, and an educational wing in 2000. The old green building after serving as a meeting place
and Sunday school rooms for so long was retired. Adding to its already illustrious history, it is now a lake house for someone.

However, the really important growth here at MUMC has been the spiritual growth of its members. Members throughout the years have responded to opportunities to serve others through their support for local and world missions, to serve each other with love,
encouragement, and companionship, and to serve our Lord by striving in all our ways to be vessels for His work.

Martinez United Methodist Church stands today as a tribute to the vision, the faith, the giving, and the hard work of many people during the last 50+ years. Our job now is to continue to seek out and to follow what God wants for MUMC, always remembering that the glory for all that has been done and all that will be done belongs to God.

Our Mission

Ephesians 3:17: "that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love."

Even though we are a relatively small church, there are ministry opportunities for everyone. What we experience here in Christian fellowship and community is a gift from God. Find your place to connect in service, Sunday School classes, and studies at MUMC.
